1855 Treaty divides

in 1855 was that
island of Sakhalin/Karafuto
were equally accessible
to Japanese-Russians.
1860- First Japanese in USA.
1860-Japan; Zionist in Japan- NOt Jews. Difference exists between Jews vs Zionist-Jews.
Jews started coming to Japan in the 1860s, when Japan was opened to trade. There quickly became a small population of Jewish businessmen in Kobe, along with the other port cities of Yokohama and Nagasaki. By the early 1900s (decade), there existed a Zionist organization and well established Jewish community in Kobe, and the city received its first synagogue in 1912. So, when trade with Russia declined in Nagasaki prior to the Russo-Japanese War and the great Kanto earthquake struck Yokohama in 1923, the majority of the Jewish population in Japan ended up in Kobe. As a trickle of Jewish immigrants continued, by the start of World War II Kobe had a well-off Jewish community of about 1000 people and 50 families.[1] As one scholar puts it, "Kobe was the center of what little Jewish life existed in Japan at that time. The community, which numbered several dozen families, was composed primarily of Sephardim originally from Iraq and Iran, and Ashkenazim who had originally lived in Russia."[2] This Jewish community of Kobe, which came to be known as JEWCOM, its cable address, was treated without prejudice by the Japanese government

Japan didn't want Japanese
to get Chinese discrimination by Westerners.
1870- Lenin born in Russia.
1871-instead of diplomacy;
Joseon Dynasty-KOREAN isolation
misunderstood
by "assertive American"
led to first American
battle on "GanghWA Is"
of KOREA- USA wanted
a strategic naval port
for America in Asia
to ensure "trade"
missions from
USA to ASIA;
(Foreshadowing how USA
took Hawaii-
for its sole purpose
of gaining
american naval port
Pearl Harbor)
1872 Hawaii's Kamehameha Ruling End.
1872- Japanese recruited FRENCH to build
their military-naval-war ships.
1873-Japanese with FRENCH instruction - created
Japanese military.
History shows Japanese lacked
originality-talent-skill.
Japanese learned from CHINA.
then Japanese learns from FRENCH to attack
CHINA thru tricking KOREANS with false promise of freedom.
1875-Russia and Japan make
treaty over property rights;
Sakhalin given to RUSSIA
and
Kuril Islands given to Japan.
1875 US make Hawaii Sign Treaty.

(given; Joseon-Dynasty-KOREA refused diplomay with USA.
That's when Japan threatened
KOREA- therefore USA accessed KOREA thru
USA partnership with Japan...this
from 1876 would continue repeatedly
throughout history of KOREA being
manipulatd for USA-Japans' benefit)
1881 - Hawaiian King Kalakaua visit Japan.
1882-quoting wiki;
" , the United States and Korea negotiated and approved a 14-article treaty.[16] The treaty established mutual friendship and mutual assistance in case of attack;[17] and also addressed such specific matters as extraterritorial rights for American citizens in Korea[18] and most favored nation trade status.[19]
The treaty remained in effect until the annexation of Korea in 1910"
*1882- Treaty signed between USA and KOREA
; USA backstabs KOREA by
USA siding with JAPAN when JAPAN 'annexed-invaded'
KOREA from 1910. USA did not come to KOREA's
aide like described in "1882 TREATY between
USA and KOREA"
(Exact same 1882 backstabbing of USA-Japan
reoccurs repeatedly in KOREAN History)...
(Exactly the same 1882 events
in 1910-1945-1950-1953-modern day 2013)
1882-KIM Ok-Gyun (of Joseon-KOREA) was in Japan.
1884 - JAPAN lies to KOREA-tricking KOREA
to seperate from CHINA.
(just as SOVIET-REDS lied to Nazi-Germany)
(just as USA-Truman lied to S.KOREA)
(just as KOREA was prevented from
joining "San Francisco Treaty" where
Japan-49 Nations gathered...
1885 - Japan allow Japanese immigration to Hawaii.

but even by 1890, Japs manipulated-outsourced
EUROPEANS to fight Asian Neighbors.
1890- USA faces "ECONOMIC DEPRESSION"
in 1890.
(foreshadowing
of the USA's Great Depression in1920)
1890-USA starts "FOREIGN" encroachment
like that of Great Britain
because USA suffers from
economic depression.
1891- CHINa- ammunition purchases seized.
Military fund was embezzled by CHINESE empress
for "BEIJING palace renovations".
*NOTING unpaid soldiers- OPIUM usages-low morale-ruined militia.

1891 - Hawaiian King Kalakaua dies during voyage
to San Francisco.
1893 -First Attempt to annex Hawaii to USA.
1893 - US Prez Cleveland investigated the
overthrow of Hawaiian Manarchy.
1894 - Japan goes to war with China. Japan's better equipped forces win victory in just nine months.
1894-Mar28th; KIM Ok-Gyun favoring
Korea's seperation from CHINA
was assasinated in SHANGHAI
by another KOREA (HONG JONG-U).
*NOTE: proof here continues
to future generations....
1. In 1894 ; Japanese
entice -lies-lurrs
KOREAN (KiM) to riot against CHINA
; to seperate KOREA from CHINA.
(Japan hides behind a KOREAn)
2. in 1894; CHINA
uses KOREAN (HONG) to kill
(Kim)KOREAN siding with JAPAN.
3. Korean vs KOREAn
puppetted by cowardly
Japan attacking CHINA
behind a mask...Jap/Chinese cowards.
4. Guillable KOREANS used as scapegoats
hiding Jap/Chinese master-minds.
1894-Mar28th; Japanese-lured "KIM" of KOREA
under Qing Dynasty of China
was "murdered" while
hiding in Japanese owned inn in Shanghai...
and Japanese used his murder
as an excuse to ATTACK CHINA.
1894-JUNE1st ; Japs enter Seoul.
KOREAN KING requested CHINESE Troops
to help KOreans from invasion of JAPS.
1894-JUNE6th; Chinese said were encouraged by Jap to help KOREA.
Chinese said notified Japs before entering KOREA.
- BuT JAPS twisted the situation
into illegality of Chinese
entering KOREA before notifying Japan-
1894-JUNE8th, Japs entered INCHEON (aka jemulpo).
Japs entering Chinese-Property KOREA
was only possible
by Japs first stirring
KOREANs to seperate from CHINA.
Stirred Chaos initiated by JAPS
gave Japs an opportunity
to invade KOREA
in false pretense of
supporting KOREA's
seperation attempt
from CHINA-
but in TRUTH; JAPs
wanted to invade KOREA
as slaves to Japan-
giving opportuinity
to attack CHINA using KOREA
as Japan's MILITARY base.
(THIS mirrors again in 1910 invasion
of KOREA....sick/immortal/deceitful Japs);
Quoted from Wikipedia;
"However, according to the Chinese, the Japanese encouraged the Chinese to honor the Koreans' request by sending in the troops.'
(So Japs, even in 1894, played Chinese
on Korean and pitted KOREAns to leave CHINA;
from the middle- JAPANESE stirred
chaos between CHINA and KOREA;
1. Japan encouraged CHINESE to help Koreans
2. Japan encouraged KOREANS to seperate from China
3. Japan twisted situations
to justify Japanese entrace on Chinese property
; Japs entered Korea on
false pretense of helping Korea get free
from CHINA- but in truth
Japan wanted to enslave KOREA
in order to attack CHINA.
4. KOREA, even in 1894 had
nothing to gain from leaving CHINA.
5. FALSe promise of help
from Japan in freeing
KOREA from CHINA -
so wrong!
Japs' deceptions from 1894
continued generations to 1910 invasion.

1894 JUNE
In addition, Japanese officials also
implied that Japan had no intention to intervene.
As a result, the key Chinese official Li Hongzhang
"was lured into believing that Japan would not wage war,
whereas Tokyo was fully prepared to act." [9] Japan requested
that China and Japan co-operate to reform the Korean government,
which China refused.
Korea requested that Japan withdraw its troops which Japan refused.
The Japanese force of 8,000 strong subsequently seized the KOREAN king,
occupied the Royal Palace in Seoul by early June 1894,
and replaced the existing government with members
from the pro-Japanese faction. A new government was formed July 25.
[8] Though Chinese troops were already leaving Korea, finding themselves
unneeded there, the new pro-Japanese Korean government
granted Japan the right to expel the Chinese troops forcibly,
while Japan shipped more troops to Korea. The legitimacy of the
new government was rejected by China, and the stage was thus set for conflict

quote from wiki;
1895-"a pro-Russian official tried to remove the king of Korea to the Russian legation and failed, but a second attempt succeeded so for a year the King reigned from the Russian legation in Seoul. The concession to build a Seoul-Inchon railway had been granted to Japan in 1894 was revoked and granted to Russia. 1898- quote from wiki;
"Russia signed a 25-year lease on the Liaodong Peninsula and proceeded to set up a naval station at Port Arthur. Although this infuriated the Japanese, they were more concerned with Russian encroachment toward Korea than in Manchuria. Other powers, such as France, Germany and Great Britain, took advantage of the situation in China and gained port and trade concessions at the expense of the decaying Qing Empire. Tsingtao and Kiaochow was acquired by Germany, Kwang-Chou-Wan by France and Weihaiwei by Great Britain.
Tensions between Russia and Japan would increase in the years after the First Sino-Japanese war. During the Boxer Rebellion an eight-member international force was sent to suppress and quell the uprising; Russia sent troops into Manchuria as part of this force. After the suppression of the Boxers the Russian government agreed to vacate the area"
1899 USA initiates "principles" of OPEN DOOR
with CHINA
1900-Japan;The first part of Hirohito's reign took place against a background of financial crisis and increasing military power within the government, through both legal and extralegal means. The Imperial Japanese Army andImperial Japanese Navy had held veto power over the formation of cabinets since 1900, and between 1921 and 1944 there were no fewer than 64 incidents of political violence.
1900- USA's HAYS initiated
a mutual agreement ONLY JAPAN rejected.
Northern China's resistance of European Armies
prompted USA's Hays to keep CHINA
independent.
quoting Wiki;
" William Woodville Rockhill formulated the Open Door Policy in aim to safeguarding American business opportunities and other interests in China.[3] U.S. Secretary of State John Hay sent notes to the major powers (France, Germany, Britain, Italy, Japan, and Russia), asking them to declare formally that they would uphold Chinese territorial and administrative integrity and would not interfere with the free use of the treaty ports within their spheres of influence in China. The Open Door Policy stated that all nations, including the United States, could enjoy equal access to the Chinese market.[4]
In reply, each country tried to evade Hay's request, taking the position that it could not commit itself until the other nations had complied. However, by July 1900, Hay announced that each of the powers had granted consent in principle. Although treaties made after 1900 refer to the Open Door Policy, competition among the various powers for special concessions within China for railroad rights, mining rights, loans, foreign trade ports, and so forth, continued unabated.[5]"
1901 - First Koreans arrive in USA.
1902- quoting wiki;
"the United States government protested that Russian encroachment in Manchuria after the Boxer Rebellion was a violation of the Open Door Policy. When Japan replaced Russia in southern Manchuria after the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905) the Japanese and U.S. governments pledged to maintain a policy of equality in Manchuria. In finance, American efforts to preserve the Open Door Policy led (1909) to the formation of an international banking consortium through which all Chinese railroad loans would agree (1917) to another exchange of notes between the United States and Japan in which there were renewed assurances that the Open Door Policy would be respected, but that the United States would recognize Japan's special interests in China (the Lansing-Ishii Agreement). The Open Door Policy had been further weakened by a series of secret treaties (1917) between Japan and the Allied Triple Entente, which promised Japan the German possessions in China on successful conclusion of World War I.[6] The subsequent realization of such promise in the Versailles Treaty of 1919 angered the Chinese public and sparkled the protest known as May Fourth Movement.
Since the policy in effect hindered Chinese sovereignty, the government of Republic of China endeavored to revise related treaties with foreign powers in the twenties and thirties. Only until the conclusion of World War II did China manage to regain its full sovereignty."
*NOTE: by end of WW2;
- Only KOREA was not freed.
-China was given full sovereignty;
given China's Hong KOng given to Great Britain for decades
before returned to China.
-Japan escaped paying war-crime compensation
to KOreans and Chinese by partnering with USA
-USA gained free rein over KOREA under
false pretense of securing KOREA
while in truth keeping KOREA seperated.
-USSR-Soviet keeps N.KOREA while
prevented from USA-JAPAN from attacking Japan
in order to settle property dispute with Japan.
-Germany freed from Soviet-RED Nazi influence.
-Jewish concentration camp prisoners are freed
and compensated; which KOREANS are not...
1903 - First Korean arrive in Hawaii.
1903-quoting wiki;
"by 1903 it had actually increased the size of its forces in Manchuria. Negotiations between the two nations (1901–1904) to establish mutual recognition of respective spheres of influence (Russia over Manchuria and Japan over Korea) were repeatedly and intentionally stalled by the Russians. They felt that they were strong and confident enough not to accept any compromise and believed Japan would not dare go to war against a European power. Russia also had intentions to use Manchuria as a springboard for further expansion of its interests in the Far East. In 1903, Russian soldiers began construction of a fort at Yongnampo but stopped at Japanese protests.[8]
In 1902 Japan formed an alliance with Britain, the terms of which stated that if Japan went to war in the Far East and that a third power entered the fight against Japan, then Britain would come to the aid of the Japanese. This was a check to prevent either Germany or France from intervening militarily in any future war with Russia. Japan sought to prevent a repetition of the Triple Intervention that deprived her of Port Arthur. The British reasons for joining the alliance were: to check the spread of Russian expansion into the Pacific area; to strengthen Britains hand to focus on other areas and to gain a powerful naval ally in the Pacific.
Increasing tensions between Japan and Russia as a result of Russia's unwillingness to enter into a compromise and the prospect of Korea falling under Russia's domination, therefore coming into conflict with and undermining Japan's interests, compelled Japan to take action. This would be the deciding factor and catalyst that would lead to the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–05."
1904-Zionist in Japan ; Zionist differes from Jews
While it is clear that the Japanese played great hosts to the Jewish refugees in Kobe, it is less obvious that exceptional treatment of the Jews was no accident. Beyond the simple compassion of the general public, the government had far more calculated reasons for begin to hospitable to the Jews. First, there was a feeling of indebtedness to the Jewish people, as the financier of the Russo-Japanese War was a Jewish New York banker by the name of Jacob Schiff. Japan needed money to fight the war in 1904, and few banks in Europe were willing to take such a risky venture. No one thought Japan had a chance to defeat Russia, a major Western power. Schiff, however, agreed to grant Japan loans that amounted to over $200 million, when no one else would help.[4] This money led to Japan's victory and after the war, Schiff was treated like a hero in Japan and became the first foreigner to receive the Order of the Rising Sun from the emperor.[5] Therefore, the Japanese already had a quite favorable impression of Jews, as Schiff was a symbol of international Jewish wealth and power and the Japanese felt indebted to him.
1903- A branch of Poale Zion came into existence in New York City in 1903

1905 the Poale Zion (Workers of Zion) Party was founded in Palestine and a month later the Socialist Jewish Labour Party (Poale Zion) was formed in the United States and Canada
1906 the Jewish Social Democratic Labour Party (Poale Zion) was created in Russia.
1906 a formal Poale Zion party was formed in Poltava, Ukraine, under the leadership of Ber Borochov, and other groups were soon formed elsewhere in Europe, including in Poland, Austria and the UK.[citation needed]
1906 - Hawaii recruited Filipino laborers
due to
limitations of chinese-Japanese-Korean immigration legislation
1906-Radically Socialist-Zionist-Jews
The key features of the ideology of early Poale Zion were acceptance of the Marxist view of history with the addition of the role of nationalism, which Borochov believed could not be ignored as a factor in historical development. A Jewish proletariat would come into being in the land of Israel, according to Poale Zion, and would then take part in the class struggle. These views were set out in Borochov's Our Platform, published in 1906.
1907-A World Union of Poale Zion was formed. The first World Congress took place in August 1907 in The Hague
1909- Zionist second congress in 1909 in Kraków emphasised practical socialist projects in Palestine,

in INVADING KOREA.
1910 - Japan annexes Korea after three years of fighting. Japan is now one of the world's great powers.
1911-Revolution initiated by CHINA against JAPAN.
1911-Zionist congresses followed in Vienna (1911 and 1920)
1914-started WWI;
In Ottoman Palestine, Poale Zion founded the Hashomer guard organization that guarded settlements of the Yishuv, and took up the ideology of "conquest of labor" (Kibbush Ha'avoda) and Avoda Ivrit ("Hebrew labor"). Poale Zion set up employment offices, kitchens and health services for members. These eventually evolved into the institutions of labor Zionism in Israel. During World War I, Poale Zion was instrumental in recruiting members to the Jewish Legion.
Poale Zion was active in Britain during World War I, under the leadership of J Pomeranz and Morris Meyer, and influential on the British labour movement, including on the drafting (by Sidney Webb and Arthur Henderson) of the Labour Party’s War Aims Memorandum, recognising the 'right of return' of Jews to Palestine, a document which preceded the Balfour Declaration by three months.[4]
1914 - Japan joins World War I on the side of Britain and her allies. Japan has limited participation.

1919-1920; Radical ZIONIST Uprising;
Poale Zion split into Left and Right factions in 1919-1920, following a similar division that occurred in the Second International and at least partially resulting from some activists' concern with the ongoing chaos and violence occurring in Bolshevik-controlled Russia. Poale Zion Left, which supported the Bolshevik revolution, continued to be strongly sympathetic to Marxism and Communism, and repeatedly lobbied the Soviet Union for membership in the Communist International. Their attempts were unsuccessful, as the Soviets (particularly non-Zionist Jewish members) continued to be suspicious of Zionism's nationalist tendencies, and some party leaders also held personal grudges against the group's members.

1931 - Japanese invade Manchuria.
1931 - Japan invades Manchuria, renames it and installs a puppet regime.
Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931 and parts of China in 1937 (the Second Sino-Japanese War). Hirohito never really objected to China's invasion.[10] It had been recommended to him by his chiefs of staff and prime minister Fumimaro Konoe. His main concern seems to have been the possibility of an attack by the Soviet Union in the north. His questions to his chief of staff, Prince Kan'in, and minister of the army, Hajime Sugiyama, were mostly about the time it could take to crush Chinese resistance.
According to Akira Fujiwara, Hirohito personally ratified the Japanese Army's proposal to remove the constraints of international law on the treatment of Chinese prisoners on August 5.[11] And the works of Yoshiaki Yoshimi and Seiya Matsuno show that the Emperor authorized, by specific orders (rinsanmei), the use of chemical weapons against the Chinese.[12] During the invasion of Wuhan, from August to October 1938, the Emperor authorized the use of toxic gas on 375 separate occasions,[13] despite the resolution adopted by the League of Nationson May 14 condemning Japanese use of toxic gas.
1932 - Japanese prime minister is assassinated by ultra-nationalist terrorists. The military holds increasing influence in the country.

Poland - Starts WW2.
1939- As Poland was divided up between Germany and the Russians in 1939, many Jews had to flee and chose Lithuania as their destination. As thousands of Polish Jews began to descend on the capital city of Kovno, leaders of the community started frantically looking for consulates that would grant a visa and thus provide asylum from the incoming Russians. After being turned away by the U.S., British-run Palestine, and nearly every other desirable location, the Polish Jews found an answer in the Japanese consulate.

1940-Japan allied with Nazi Germany;
On September 27, 1940, ostensibly under Hirohito's leadership, Japan formed Tripartite Pact with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, forming the Axis Powers.
1941-On September 4, 1941, the Japanese Cabinet met to consider war plans prepared by Imperial General Headquarters, and decided that:
Our Empire, for the purpose of self-defense and self-preservation, will complete preparations for war ... [and is] ... resolved to go to war with the United States, Great Britain, and the French if necessary. Our Empire will concurrently take all possible diplomatic measures vis-à-vis the United States and Great Britain, and thereby endeavor to obtain our objectives ... In the event that there is no prospect of our demands being met by the first ten days of October through the diplomatic negotiations mentioned above, we will immediately decide to commence hostilities against the United States, Britain and the French.
1941-On November 25 Henry L. Stimson, United States Secretary of War noted in his diary that he had discussed with US President Franklin D. Roosevelt the severe likelihood that Japan was about to launch a surprise attack, and that the question had been "how we should maneuver them [the Japanese] into the position of firing the first shot without allowing too much danger to ourselves.'"
1941 - Japan launches a surprise attack on the US Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Twelve ships are sunk, with a further 9 damaged; nearly 2,500 people are killed. The US and its main allies declare war on Japan the following day.

1940- (Zionist Jews in Japan)
"How come Jews in Kobe,Japan; hiding from
Jewish Concentration Camps" assisted in loaning
100million US Dollars starting in 1902 for Japan
to INVADE KOREA-where Japan did worse to KOREANS
than crimes committed to Jews by Nazi? It was the ZIONIST-Jews and not the Jews.
US Prez Truman befriended ZIONIST-Jews.
Those staying in Japsince 1860's were ZIONIST-Jews
1942-In the early stages of World War II, Kobe unexpectedly started to receive the thousands of Jewish refugees coming from Europe to Japan at a rapid pace. The migrants came from several areas under Nazi rule, including Germany, Austria, and Poland. Arriving between July 1940 and September 1941, these Jews were greeted in Japan by the local communities. Usually arriving by ship to the Japanese port city of Tsuruga via Vladivostok, Russia, delegates of JEWCOM from Kobe gave the refugees a warm welcome and paid for the transport from Tsuruga to Kobe.[6] This was a great relief for the refugees, especially the Polish Jews, who had just finished a 6,000 mile journey across Asia and had little to support themselves.
However, a rapid influx of over 4,600 refugees needing food and shelter was no easy task for a modest Jewish community to deal with. About 1,000 refugees were able to secure transit to other parts of the world, but the rest stayed in Kobe[7] and help was required from American organizations and the Japanese government to deal with the Europeans trying to escape persecution.
1945 - USA TRUMAN atomic bombs Japan.

signs a pact to have all US Military
removed from KOREA...to
which Truman said
starting in 1950 Us military
would help educate
Southern Koreans
to be military armed so

1947 SOVIET-REDS expelled Japanese from Kuril Islands.

feuding with SOVIET-REDS over
Japanese retreatment from
1910-1945 Take over of KOREA
as well as 1930-1945 take
over of Chinas' Manchuria.
How Japan got USA Truman support
to feud/fight/declare
war with SOVIET-REDS
leading to US Military
occupation of KOREA since 1945
; USA took interest in KOREA
thru Japanese influence
in USA challenging
SOVIET-REDS recruitment
of CHINA and Northern KOREA

------Jews living in Kobe,Japan from 1860's to present 2013-----------------
Such a comfortable situation existed for several reasons. First, JEWCOM was a well organized group that had its primary goal from 1940-1941 as the procuring of food, shelter, and security for every Jew in Kobe. This was made possible by ample funding from the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, or the JDC, a group that funded rescue efforts for Jews throughout the war. Additional funding supplemented that of the JDC from the Vaad Hatzala, a relief organization similar to the JDC but only focusing on Orthodox Jews.[11]
After funds were secured for JEWCOM, the question of whether the Jews could live comfortably or not was left up to how they were treated by their Japanese hosts. This treatment could not have been much better. First, the Japanese public helped welcome, along with JEWCOM officials, most boats of refugees coming into Japan in Tsuruga. They bestowed gifts upon the newcomers to Japan and in Kobe, the Jews almost had extraterritoriality. The Japanese government referred all dealings with refugees to JEWCOM officials, and even ignored many petty crimes like littering and shoplifting by the Jewish residents. Almost every survivor’s account of Kobe recalls the delightfully compassionate nature of the Japanese public. "There was noanti-Semitism to the refugees in Kobe, only compassion and kindness,"[12] recalls one survivor, while the president of JEWCOM remarked, "Japan is the first free country [the refugees] have reached, and its representatives abroad have shown so much humane feeling to our unfortunate fellow countrymen that we can only express our appreciation."[13] There are also several instances of the kindness of the Japanese towards Jewish residents that have been recorded. One letter came to JEWCOM headquarters from a Japanese farmer who had heard there were over sixty children among the refugees, and that he would be honored if he could give some of the fruit he was growing as a gift to the children. In another case, a local Kobe doctor refused to accept money for treatment of a child upon finding out he was a Jewish refugee. These random acts of kindness made the refugees truly comfortable, and many Japanese said how bad they felt for the Jews. The Jewish community in Kobe was also able to practice their religion fully, and had two functioning synagogues. The Japanese even helped with the importation of matzo for Passover in 1941. Furthermore, the Mir yeshiva, which was among the Polish refugees and became the only European yeshiva to remain intact after the war, was given a building to continue their Torah studies. These Orthodox Jews aroused much curiosity in the Japanese people, and after investigation an official admired the group’s "holy idealism."[14]Thus, the favorable treatment of the Jews made life in Kobe in 1940 and 1941 surprisingly pleasant.
The Fugu Plan[edit]
Main article: Fugu Plan
The high regard for Jews that Schiff started was still in the minds of Japanese when they invaded Manchuria in 1931. In Manchuria, the city of Harbin had a considerable Russian Jewish population who had fled persecution in their homeland. Many of these Jews were successful businessmen and engineers.[5] The notion of skilled Manchurian Jews was coupled with years of anti-Semitic doctrines being passed along to Japan through the West were particularly influential.[15] Given the growing number of Jewish refugees in Europe and the Japanese perception of their ability to be successful and influence governments, pro-Jewish memorandums were discussed to court Jews of the world and settle them in Manchuria in order to develop local industry. In addition, its authors hoped that Jews would repay the Japanese for their kindness by helping them as Schiff had and influencing their powerful brethren in the U.S. and Britain to develop pro-Japanese policies.
Despite Nazis appeals to the Japanese government to adopt harsher policies towards the Jews. These requests were denied outright by the Japanese, and on December 31, 1940, Japanese Foreign Minister Matsuoka stated, "I am the man responsible for the alliance with Hitler, but nowhere have I promised that we would carry out his anti-Semitic policies in Japan. This is not simply my personal opinion, it is the opinion of Japan, and I have no compunction about announcing it to the world."[16] leading the Japanese to defend the Jews and refuse to adopt anti-Semitic policies.
Conclusion[edit]
As Pearl Harbor approached, the atmosphere in Kobe began to change. Japanese authorities were nervous about any foreigners in Japan, and Kobe had an obvious foreign population. The decision was made that any Jews who hadn’t lived in Kobe prior to the war were to be deported to Shanghai and the port was cleared out in preparation for war. Leaving comfortable life in Kobe came as unwelcome news to many of the refugees, but most still recognized they would be able to survive the war and was thankful for their position away from the Holocaust in Europe. So, almost as quickly as it began the flourishing Jewish community of Kobe was sent to Shanghai where it remained for the duration of the war. However, for a little under a year, Kobe served as an oasis in a world of terror. Through a series of unlikely coincidences, thousands of people who surely would have perished in their homelands were able to live comfortably in a time of war. A testament to the relatively excellent conditions for Jews in Kobe, only two refugees died among the thousands during the duration of Kobe’s wartime Jewish community. Today, a small Jewish community lives on in Kobe, and is the oldest in Japan.[17] Though most remnants of Jewish life have faded away, the Ohel Shelomo synagogue from 1912 remains and is a reminder of the city’s Jewish past. Compassionate Japanese hosts, as well as organized and well financed Jewish aid, made the Jews of Kobe some of the most fortunate in the world during World War II.
-------------------------Korean ethnic nationalism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Korean ethnic nationalism, or racial nationalism,[1] is a political ideology and a form of ethnic identity that is prevalent in modern Korea. It is based on the belief that Koreans form a nation, a race, or an ethnic group that shares a unified bloodline and a distinct culture.[2] It is centered around the notion of theminjok (민족; 民族), a term that had been coined in Japan in the early Meiji period on the basis of Social Darwinian conceptions. Minjok has been translated as "nation," "people," "ethnic group," and "race-nation."
This conception started to emerge among Korean intellectuals after the Japanese-imposed Protectorate of 1905,[3] when the Japanese were trying to persuade Koreans that both nations were of the same racial stock.[4][5] The notion of the Koreanminjok was first made popular by essayist and historian Shin Chaeho in his New Reading of History (1908), a history of Koreafrom the mythical times of Dangun to the fall of Balhae in 926 CE. Shin portrayed the minjok as a warlike race that had fought bravely to preserve Korean identity, had later declined, and now needed to be reinvigorated.[6] During the period of Japanese rule (1910-1945), this belief in the uniqueness of the Korean minjok gave an impetus for resisting Japanese assimilationpolicies and historical scholarship.[7]
In contrast to Japan and Germany, where such race-based conceptions of the nation were discredited after the Second World War because they were associated with ultranationalism or Nazism,[8] postwar North and South Korea continued to proclaim the ethnic homogeneity and pure bloodline of the "Great Han" race.[4][9] In the 1960s, President Park Chung-heestrengthened this "ideology of racial purity" to legitimate his authoritarian rule,[10] while in North Korea official propaganda has portrayed Koreans as "the cleanest race."[4][5] Contemporary Korean historians continue to write about the nation's "unique racial and cultural heritage."[11] This shared conception of a racially defined Korea continues to shape Korean politics and foreign relations,[9] gives Koreans an impetus to national pride,[12] and feeds hopes for the reunification of the two Koreas.[13]
Despite statistics showing that Korea is becoming an increasingly multi-ethnic society,[14] most of the Korean population continues to identify itself as "one people" (danil minjok; 단일민족; 單一民族) joined by a common bloodline.[15] A renewed emphasis on the purity of Korean "blood"[16] has caused tensions, leading to renewed debates on multi-ethnicity and xenophobia both in Korea and abroad.[14]

Early use[edit]
Contrary to popular belief in Korea, the Korean ideology of purest race began only in the early 20th century when the Japanese annexed Korea[4] and launched a campaign to persuade them that they were of the same pure racial stock as the Japanese themselves.[5]
In the colonial period, the Japanese assimilation policy claimed that Koreans and Japanese were of common origin but the former always subordinate. The pure blood theory was used to justify colonialist policies to replace Korean cultural traditions with Japanese ones in order to supposedly get rid of all distinctions and achieve equality between Koreans and inlanders.[9]The policy included changing Korean names into Japanese, exclusive use of Japanese language, school instruction in the Japanese ethical system, and Shinto worship.[9] B.R. Myers argues that seeing the failure of the pure assimilationist policy, Japanese imperial ideologues changed their policy into creating a Korean ethnic-patriotism on par with the Japanese one. They encouraged Koreans to take pride in their koreanness, in their history, heritage, culture and "dialect" as a brother nation going back to a common ancestry with the Japanese. Thus, Korean nationalism is a deliberate creation of the empire of Japan.
Independence[edit]
Shin Chaeho (신채호; 申采浩; 1880–1936), the founder of the nationalistic historiography of modern Korea and a Korean independence movement activist, published his influential book of reconstructed history Joseon Sanggosa (조선상고사; 朝鮮上古史; The Early History of Joseon) in 1924-25, proclaiming that Koreans are descendants of Dangun (단군; 檀君), the legendary ancestor of Korean people, who merged with Buyo of Manchuria to form the Goguryeo (고구려; 高句麗) people.[17]
Borrowing from the Japanese theory of nation and race,[17] Shin Chaeho located the martial roots of the Korean in Goguryeo,[17] which he depicted as militarist, expansionist which turned out to inspire pride and confidence in the resistance against the Japanese.[17] In order to establish Korean uniqueness, he also replaced the story of Gija (기자, 箕子) whose founder was the paternal uncle or brother of the Chinese Shang emperor Zhou with the Dangun legend [18] and asserted that it is the important ways to establish Korea’s uniqueness.[17]
After the independence in the late 1940s, despite the split between North and South Korea, neither side disputed the ethnic homogeneity of the Korean nation based on a firm conviction that they are purest descendant of a legendary genitor and half-god figure called Dangun who founded Gojoseon in 2333 BCE based on the description of the Dongguk Tonggam (1485).[9][19]
Reception[edit]
In Korea, pure blood theory is a common belief justified as "defensive nationalism."[20] The debates on this topic can be found sporadic in the South, whereas the public opinion in the North is hard to access. In a nationalistic view, to impugn the theory would have been tantamount to betraying Koreanness in the face of the challenge of an alien ethnic nation.[9]
Some Korean scholars observed that the pure blood theory served as a useful tool for the South Korean government to make its people obedient and easy to govern when the country was embroiled in ideological turmoil.[20] It was especially true in the dictatorial leaderships by former presidents Syngman Rhee and Park Chung-hee when nationalism was incorporated into anti-Communism.[20]
The ideology also maintains a conviction amongst Koreans that both South and North Koreans are all brothers and sisters of the same blood-family and reunification is the ultimate goal.
Contemporary social issues[edit]
Xenophobia[edit]
The notion of the pure blood theory comes at the cost of discrimination on people of both "foreign-blood" and "mixed blood."[14]
According to 2009 statistics published by Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare, there are 144,385 couples of international marriage in South Korea as of May, 2008. 88.4% of immigrants were female, and 61.9% were from China.[21] Recently it has been argued that South Korean society had already become a multicultural society. As of 2011, 10 ministries and agencies of South Korean government are supporting international couples and foreign workers in South Korea toward the cultural plurality.[22]
In 2006, American football player Hines Ward, who was born in Seoul to a South Korean mother and an African American father became the first Korean American to win the Super Bowl MVP award. This achievement threw him into the media spotlight in South Korea.[23] When he travelled to South Korea for the first time, he raised unprecedented attention to the acceptance of "mixed blood" children. He also donated USD 1 million to establish the "Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation", which the media called "a foundation to help mixed-race children like himself in South Korea, where they have suffered discrimination."[24]
However, while Koreans are fascinated by the bi-racial sport hero, the majority of ordinary mixed-race people and migrant workers face various forms of discrimination and prejudice.[14] In 2007, the Korean pure blood theory became an international issue when the U.N. Committee on the International Convention Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination urged better education on the pure blood theory is needed especially for judicial workers such as police officers, lawyers, prosecutors and judges.[25][26] The suggestion received mixed reception in South Korea in which some raised a concern that foreigners will invade the Korean culture and challenge national sovereignty.[27] Others claim the embrace of multi-ethnicism will diminish chances of reunifying the Korean peninsula.[27]
The Korea nationality law is based on jus sanguinis[9][27] instead of the territorial principle which takes into account the place of birth. In this context, most Koreans have stronger attachment to "ethnic Koreans living in foreign countries" than to "ethnic non-Koreans living in Korea."[9][27]
In 2005, the opposition Grand National Party suggested a revision of the current nationality law to allow Korean nationality to people who are born in South Korea regardless of the nationalities of their parents but it was discarded due to unfavorable public opinion.[14]
Racism is an ongoing problem and there has been a great deal of awareness in South Korea. Hines Ward was granted "honorary" South Korean citizenship.[28] Tasha Reid (also known as Natasha Shanta Reid, Korean name is Yoon Mi-rae (윤미래)) is a famous mixed race singer in Korea.[29] Middle school access has been expanded to children of illegal immigrants.[30]
A Korean Connection to the Japanese Empire
Early Korean Influences on the Japanese Imperial DynastyUpdated Feb. 8, 1998,
May, 2003, and Feb. 1, 2004
Several years ago, a friend directed me to a book I'd never heard of before. It was "Korean Impact on Japanese Culture", by Dr. Jon Covell and Alan Covell. They are Korea scholars who not only pointed out the many cultural influences that had been brought to Japan via Korea, but also proposed the idea that the Japanese imperial line may have been taken over by ethnic Koreans sometime in the fourth century A.D.
I was going over some historical material recently in the Nihongi (the Chronicles of Japan) and found some material I wanted to compare. So I also re-read the Covell's book. Here I present some of the interesting and (for me) unanswered questions that are raised.
I should mention that this kind of speculation is not welcomed by many Japanese people, who naturally accept the fact that the Japanese people and their Emperors have descended in an unbroken line, at least back to the turn of the millenium, if not back to the Sun Goddess at the beginnings of Time. And there has been a traditional but underlying animosity between the Japanese and Korean cultures for as long as anyone can remember.
My background is in Japanese culture and language; I've lived in Japan for four years and have a great appreciation for their traditions and history. Frankly, I would rather not see their earliest histories proven wrong, but I have an amateur scholar's curiosity, and I find this question interesting from an historical perspective.
First, here is some of the historical material from the fourth century in Japan, as recorded in the Nihongi. Also called the Nihon-Shoki, it was compiled in 720 A.D. at the behest of the Empress of Japan, and is one of the earliest written chronicles in Japan. (The Kojiki, written only 8 years earlier, recounts virtually the same stories, but is more difficult to read, repleat with long songs and poetry). The Nihongi tells the history of the Japanese people from the earliest creation myths, and through an enumeration of the reigns of each of the Emperors and Empresses up until 697 A.D. I use the translation by W. G. Aston, complete with many footnotes and commentaries.
Supposedly, none of this material had been properly written down before (writing was still something somewhat new to Japan), so most of it had been an oral tradition for centuries. As a result, while it certainly represents a great deal of more-or-less factual material (after the creation myths are related), it is not lent the sameverbatim creedence that we might give to more recent histories. The dates and elapsed times are certainly suspect in any case. We start with Book 8, The Emperor Chiuai.
The 14th Emperor, Chiuai ascended the throne in 191 A.D. Scholars add a minimum of 120 years to these early dates and in some cases up to 160 years, by correlation with histories recorded in China and Korea. The commonly accepted dates of Chiuai's reign are somewhere around 340 A.D.
In the second year of his reign, Chiuai took Oki-naga-tarashi-hime as his Empress; she was later to succeed him as the Empress Jingo. Previously he had three sons by two different consorts.
Unlike the introduction of most Imperial Chapters, the Nihongi does not mention where Chiuai set up his new palace. The previous Emperor Seimu, his father, was buried in Saki (near Osaka), so we are left to assume that he, like most rulers of this time, lived around the area of Naniha (Osaka) and Yamato, just to the east.
Chiuai desired to conquer the land of Kumaso, in southern Kyushu Island. But a God came to Jingo and told her that the Emperor should instead conquer the wealthy land of Mukatsu ("Over There"), which Aston identifies as the Silla kingdom in Korea. But the Emperor refused, saying that he had climbed the hill and could see nothing at all across the sea. The God came to Chiuai and told him that because of his impudence, he would never conquer Mukatsu, but that its rule would be left to the son just conceived in the Empress Jingo. Chiuai tried to subjugate Kumaso instead, but without success. In the ninth year of his reign he died; one chronicle says in was in battle against Kumaso, another that he died soon after the God prophesied his unborn son's fate. (Several different versions are recounted in theNihongi.)
Jingo and her regent decided to conceal the death of the Emperor from the people. It is not clear what they may have accomplished by this or when it was finally divulged. It was not until the "10th month" of her reign that she was endowed Great Empress, and a year later Chiuai was officially burried (in a tumulus that probably took long to construct).
Believing that Chiuai had died as a direct result of the God's curse, Jingo (as a shaman) called up the Gods to determine which one(s) had spoken to her and Chiuai previously, so that she could give offerings, reportedly so that she could successfully obtain the treasured land of Mukatsu. The God identified itself a 'the lady of sky-distant Mukatsu'.
Very soon after Chiuai's death, Jingo decided to embark on the conquest of Mukatsu (Korea) and gathered an army and navy. On the sea they were buoyed up by winds and currents so favorable that the tide carried them all the way to Silla, in the interior of Korea -- completely passing over the Kaya and Paekche kingdoms! Having reached Silla without effort, her armies battled south, conquering the other kingdoms on the way to the sea, and securing promises of servitute from all the Korean rulers.
At the time for the delivery of her child, Jingo was still in Korea, and she 'stopped up her loins with a stone' to delay the delivery so that her son could be born in Japan, where she wanted him to rule. After arriving in Kyushu, Jingo gave birth to the future Emperor Ojin, after over 11 months of pregnancy. [This looks suspiciously like an attempt to attribute the child's imperial parentage to Emperor Chiuai, who had died at least 11 months previously.]
Having reached Kyushu, her armies proceeded back to Naniha, and immediatly took on the task of "Subjugating Yamato". Yamato was part of the heartland of the Japanese Imperial dynasty, just east of Naniha, but (at least by the time of the writing of the chronicles) was also used as the name for the empire ruled by the Japanese emperors. This subjugation (of an area that Jingo had only recently left as the Emperor's widow) entailed the defeat, and death in battle, of the two older sons of Chiuai, who could have been heirs to the imperial throne. Only after these conquests was Jingo declared officially the Grand Empress.
Recall that Chiuai professed total ignorance of the existence of any lands across the sea. However, following the acent of Jingo as Empress, the Nihongi is filled with constant references to Korea. Not just for a few generations, but for hundreds and hundreds of years, scarcely a page goes by without entries about the visits, tributes, and historical happenings in the Korean kingdoms (or 'colonies') of Paekche, Silla, and Koryo. Fully half of the dated entries refer to Korea. 'The king of Paekche died', 'Paekche sent an envoy', 'envoys visited Koryo'. Under the Emperor Ojin, Jingo's son, armies were sent again to subjugate unrully vassals in Paekche.
I had "read through" the Nihongi before, but this time it amazed me to see the amount of importance given to these Korean connections over the centuries. This is not proof of anything other than the very close relationship between Japan and Korea over many centuries. It is well recognized that Korea (eventually) acted as the main intermediary source of the higher forms of culture that originated in China -- learning, writing, religion, architecture, metal-craft, textiles, pottery and so on. This closeness of political commerce between Japan and Korea beginning in the early fourth century was certainly the beginnings of that influx of cultural influence, but it well pre-dates the obvious influences that began to appear later, in the Japapese adaptation of Chinese forms of architecture, writing, learning, and religion in the seventh and eighth centuries.
Another explanation for this phenomenon relates to the scarcity of early written Japanese records. While the first chronicles did not appear in Japan until the eighth century, writing was certainly known among court scholars and scribes back into the sixth century, and the authors of the Nihongi probably had access to some court records of this time. For earlier written records, however, they may have had to look to court records of the (friendly) Korean states, focusing on those which showed interactions with Japan. It is known that Silla and Paekche were keeping records in written Chinese by the middle of the fourth century; although these records no longer exist today, they might likely have been available to the Japanese court a few centuries later. That is to say that while in Japan before writing was common, ordinary events like the arrival of tribute or envoys would not as likely have been preserved by the oral records, the written Korean records of the same era would have routinely recorded such interactions, including some that involved Japan. This might explain the large number of records in the Japanese chronicles of "routine" transactions that involved Korea, versus routine internal Japanese affairs that would not have been recorded in writing before the 7th or 8th century.
One more very startling entry is the fact that 270 years after Jingo, the 30th Emperor, Bidatsu, is simply recorded as having set up his palace at Oho-wi in Kudara, the Japanese name for Paekche, Korea! The following Emperor returned the throne to the Yamato area of Japan.
Now to the Korean side. This version is taken from "Korean Impact on Japanese Culture" by Dr. Jon Carter Covell and Alan Covell. (
Hollym International Corp., 1984 -- where you can
order this book. They are Korean history scholars who have published several historical works and have clearly done research in vernacular Korean histories, at least as early as the Nihongi. But I have not seen any of their sources myself and can only pass on what they have reported in their book.
Around 346 A.D. a tribe of shamanistic horsemen called the Puyo fled south from the main continental area around Manchuria into the Korean peninsula. They were warlike and succeeded in subjugating -- or at least intermingling with -- the people of Paekche in northwest Korea. They brought with them a special treasure, a baby princess of the royal blood of the Puyo line. Her name was Jingu, and her royal shamanistic bloodline was shared with and revered by the rulers of Paekche.
When Jingu grew up, the leaders of Paekche deemed to give her in a political marriage to the leader of the neighboring kingdom of Kaya, an ally of the Silla kingdom. He was over fifty years old and already had two sons; his name was Chuai.
Frankly, I'm unclear as to whether the Covell's found the names Jingu and Chuai in the Korean chronicles, or whether they have started from the point of view that these Japanese characters were in fact Koreans, and have then reconstructed their history using those names.
May, 2003: I'm happy that the Covell's have contacted me to clarify that in fact "The story proposed about who Jingu really was was indeed hypothetical...". This is as I expected and does not detract from the historical possibility of their hypothesis.
Within a few years, old Chuai died at home, and Jingu feared for her political fortunes, faced with the rivalry of Chuai's two sons. With the help of her regent, she gathered an army around her. Here things get fuzzy (or fuzzier). Alone, her following was not great enough, so she enlisted the alliance of Paekche with a promise to conquer more new territories (possibly including Japan). Whether this was a plan to flee militarily from Kaya or simply to gain armies against her Kaya foes is anyone's guess by this time, but she fully intended to remain a ruler in her own right and not simply revert to an honored matron, or be killed as a potential rival. If nothing else, she wanted her unborn son to be a king. (Make no mistake about it, no matter which version you like, Jingo/Jingu was one tough woman.)
Her combined armies invaded Silla just to the east, subjugating them and adding some of their forces to her own. The combined armies fought south with success and then embarked across the sea to conquer the "Land of Across" (something like Mukatsu, or 'over there'), meaning Japan. Somewhere along the line she had became pregnant, possibly by Chuai, but equally as likely by her regent, who was not himself high enough born to be a king. But the wife and son of King Chuai were Imperial timber enough, so the child was reported to be a truly royal conception.
How Chuai's two sons also wound up in Japan in order to be conquered there by Jingu is also not at all clear, and the Japanese and Korean chronicles are clearly intermingled by this time.
This version would explain how Jingu's forces arrived 'magically' in the northern parts of Korea and then fought south "back" to Japan. It also provides a strong explanation for the very close ties between her Empire and those of Korea, as she (and her lineage) would have been closely related to them culturally, politcally, and by blood and tradition.
Which version should we believe? Well, as I've said, the 'factuality' of all of these ancient chronicles is certainly in doubt, especially since they were not recorded for our edification until almost four hundred years after the fact.
It could also be speculated that -- regardless of which version you favor -- the ties between Japan and the Korean kingdoms became so close that the later written formulation of both of their historical chronicles could certainly have borrowed from each other's oral traditions -- simply by the nature of oral histories, if not by duplicitous design.
It is taken for granted that much of these histories would have been 'edited' in some ways by the Emperors -- not only those who commissioned their writing, but also in the interim hundreds of years of telling and reformulating them orally. Indeed, had writting of any kind been prevalent at the time, it would have been much more difficult to transform the Emperor Chiuai from a lord in Korea and transplant him as a Japanese Emperor who didn't believe that Korea existed. If that, in fact was the case, and I certainly have no way of knowing. For my many Japanese friends, it may be an unthinkable theory, but I must admit that for me it is just interesting food for thought.

"The Quest for Kibi", by Michael S.F. Gorman, (1999, Orchid Press; ISBN #9748299228). This work draws from much archaeological information in western Japan around Kurashiki and is another fresh perspective on Korean influences on early Japan. Like the other works mentioned here -- and as its Introduction clarifies -- "it presents primarily ideas and opinions"... without solid acedemic proof, which is certainly unlikely to be found. Japanese emperor breaks taboo, suggests mixed Korean bloodlines

Japanese emperor breaks taboo, suggests mixed Korean bloodlines Ahead of the World Cup to be jointly hosted by awkward neighbors Japan and Korea, Emperor Akihito claimed a Korean ancestor in his annual birthday address in December. However, most major news outlets did not print or broadcast his comments.
The emperor's new roots
The Japanese emperor has finally laid to rest rumours that he has Korean blood, by admitting that it is true, writes Jonathan Watts
For more than a century, speculation about the Japanese emperor's Korean roots was mostly restricted to lofty academic journals and idle coffee shop gossip.
But this week, the historical debate was surprisingly joined by a new scholar who has as much claim as anyone to be an authority on the subject: the emperor, Akihito, himself.
To the delight of South Korea and, no doubt, the silent fury of many Japanese nationalists, the current holder of the Chrysanthemum Throne used a 68th birthday press conference last weekend to celebrate his mixed origins.
Looking ahead at a year when the two countries will co-host the World Cup finals, Akihito said he felt personal attachment to Korea because of the blood ties of his ancestors.
"I, on my part, feel a certain kinship with Korea, given the fact that it is recorded in the Chronicles of Japan that the mother of Emperor Kammu was of the line of King Muryong of Paekche," he told reporters.
Kammu, reigned Japan from 781 to 806 AD, while Muryong ruled the Paekche Kingdom in Korea from 501 to 523 AD.
Although he was quoting historical records, it is the first time that an emperor has publicly lauded the Korean blood in the imperial line.
According to Japanese myths, the Chrysanthemum Throne can be traced back more than 2,600 years to the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami in the dawn of creation.
Those myths were officially discarded at the end of the second world war when emperor Hirohito was forced to renounce his divine status by the American occupation forces.
But the imperial household agency still claims Japan has the oldest imperial line in the world, unbroken across 125 generations. Although no longer a god, the emperor is still seen by Shinto priests as having an "airlike existence".
The constitution merely declares him to be the symbol of the nation. Academic debates about his ethnic and national "purity" have made little progress. The imperial household agency have reportedly made archaeological sites in the former capital of Nara off-limits because officials fears the discovery of evidence that emperor's Korean ties are far stronger than has long been taught in Japanese schools.
Last weekend, however, Akihito did nothing to dispel such associations by acknowledging that much Confucian and Buddhist teaching, as well as court music, came via the peninsular. "I believe it was fortunate to see such culture and skills transmitted from Korea to Japan," he said.
The emperor's comments induced dramatically different reactions from the two nations. In Japan, the story proved hard to stomach. It was covered in detail only by the Asahi Shimbum. Other major newspapers either mentioned the Korean ancestry issue only in passing or ignored the statement altogether.
In South Korea, however, it was front-page news and generated much editorial praise. Government spokesmen welcomed the comment as a sign of a possible thaw after a year in which bilateral relations were marred by fierce disputes over Japanese prime minister Junichiro Koizumi's visit to the controversial Yasukuni war shrine and the approval of a new history textbook that South Korean believe is a whitewash of Japan's wartime atrocities.
South Korean politicians expressed hope that it would pave the way for Akihito to attend the world cup opening ceremony in Seoul on May 31.
But no Japanese emperor has visited South Korea since the war and the imperial household agency says there are no plans for this situation to change.
Nationalist politicians are said to be opposed to an imperial visit, fearing that Akihito would come under pressure to make a new apology for Japan's wartime misdeeds.
Reading between the lines of the emperor's comments last week, however, it would seem that he is more than willing to travel to Seoul next May, making the opposite journey to that made by his Korean ancestors.

Empress Jingū (神功皇后 Jingū-kōgō), occasionally known as Empress Jingu (神功皇后 Jingu-kōgō),[1] was a Japanese Empress who ruled from the year, 201. The consort to Emperor Chūai, she also served as Regent from the time of her husband's death in 201 until her son Emperor Ōjin acceded to the throne in 269.[2] Up until the Meiji period, Jingū was considered to have been the 15th Japanese imperial ruler, according to the traditional order of succession (hence her alternate title Jingū tennō 神功天皇); but a re-evaluation of the extant historical records caused her name to be removed from that list; and her son, Emperor Ōjin, is today considered to have been the 15th sovereign.[citation needed]

[hide]Legendary narrative[edit]
No firm dates can be assigned to this historical figure's life or reign. Jingū is regarded by historians as a "legendary" figure because there is insufficient material available for further verification and study. Jingū's name before her accession to theChrysanthemum throne is said to have been Okinagatarashi-hime (息長帯比売).
Although the final resting place of this legendary regent/sovereign remains unknown, Jingū's officially designated misasagi or tomb can be visited today at Misasagi-chō in Nara.[3] This kofun-type Imperial tomb is characterized by a keyhole-shaped island located within a wide, water-filled moat.[4]
Kitabatake Chikafusa (1293–1354)[5] and Arai Hakuseki (1657–1725) claimed that she was actually Himiko, the third century shaman-queen of Yamataikoku, and, because Himiko was a historical figure, had to be included as a member of the imperial family by the authors of the Nihon Shoki. Among modern scholars, Naitō Torajirō estimates that she is Yamatohime-no-mikoto, while Higo Kazuo suggests that she is Yamato-totohimomoso-hime.
In 1881, Empress Jingū became the first woman to be featured on a Japanese banknote;[6] however, since no actual images of this legendary figure are known to exist, the representation of Jingū which was artistically contrived by Edoardo Chiossoneis entirely conjectural.
The Imperial Household has designated an official mausoleum at Saki no Tatanami no ike no e no Misasagi, Nara, in what was formerly Yamato province.[7]
Excluding the legendary Jingū, there were eight reigning empresses and their successors were most often selected from amongst the males of the paternal Imperial bloodline, which is why some conservative scholars argue that the women's reigns were temporary and that male-only succession tradition must be maintained in the 21st century.[8] Empress Gemmei, who was followed on the throne by her daughter, Empress Genshō, remains the sole exception to this conventional argument.
Controversy[edit]
Legend has it that she led an army in an invasion of Korea and returned to Japan victorious after three years. However, there is no evidence of Japanese rule in any part of Korea.[9][10] Her son Ōjin was born following her return. The legend alleges that her son was conceived but unborn when Chūai died. After those three years, the boy was born. Either a period of less than nine months contained three "years" (some seasons), e.g. three harvests, or the paternity of her late husband was just mythical and symbolic, rather than real.[11]
Some believe that Empress Jingū's conquest is only based on the Gwanggaeto Stele. But the legend of Jingū's invasion of the Korean peninsula also appears in the ancient Japanese chronicles Kojiki written in 680 and Nihon Shoki written in 720. In addition, the Nihon Shokistates that Father of Empress Jingū is Emperor Kaika's grandchild and her mother is of theKatsuragi clan.[12]
Some claim that characters were modified and the Japanese presence added on the Gwanggaeto Stele. Today, Japanese and some Chinese scholars discredit the intentionally damaged stele theory based on the study of the stele itself[13][14] and the pre–Sakō and pre-lime-marred rubbings.[15] Japanese military activities, defeated by Gwanggaeto, occupy half of the stele. The interpretation of the stele is still debated because, whether intentionally or not, the stele was damaged and the missing pieces make it impossible to translate. According to the book "From Paekchae Korea to the Origin of Yamato Japan" the Japanese misinterpreted theGwanggaeto Stele. The Stele was a tribute to a Korean King, but because of a lack of punctuation the writing can be translated 4 different ways; this same Stele can be intrepreted as saying Korea crossed the sea and subjugated Japan, depending on where you punctuate the sentence.
The Chinese Book of Song of the Liu Song Dynasty, written by the Chinese historian Shen Yue (441–513), notes the Japanese presence in the Korean peninsula. However, the Liu Song dynasty, as a southern Chinese dynasty of ancient times, had little contact with northeast Asia and most historians in Japan, Korea, and elsewhere believe that this dynasty most likely treated Baekje, Silla, and Yamato Japan as one and the same. It is unlikely that this error was committed with regards to the Sui Dynasty and Goguryeo because they were major powers at the time.
The Chinese Book of Sui says that Japan provided military support to Baekje and Silla.[16]
According to the Samguk Sagi (Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms), written in 1145, King Asinsent his son Jeonji as a hostage in 397.[17] And King Silseong of Silla sent his son in 402; both were attempts to secure military aid from Yamato Japan so that the two nations could continue campaigns they had begun prior to the requests. Further complicating the relationship between the Japanese ruler and Korea is that, according to the Nihon shoki, Korean princeAmenohiboko came to Japan,[18] and became the grandfather of Tajima Mori.[19] Whether the Koreans sent hostages or relatives with familial ties to Korean is debated.

Baekje or Paekche (Hangul: 백제; Hanja: 百濟, Korean pronunciation: [pɛk̚tɕ͈e]) (18 BCE – 660 CE) was a kingdom located in southwest Korea. It was one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, together with Goguryeo and Silla.
Baekje was founded by Onjo, the third son of Goguryeo's founderJumong and So Seo-no, at Wiryeseong (present-day southern Seoul). Baekje, like Goguryeo, claimed to succeed Buyeo, a state established in present-day Manchuria around the time of Gojoseon's fall.
Baekje alternately battled and allied with Goguryeo and Silla as the three kingdoms expanded control over the peninsula. At its peak in the 4th century, Baekje controlled most of the western Korean peninsula, as far north as Pyongyang, and may have even held territories in China, such as in Liaoxi, though this is controversial. It became a significant regional sea power, with political and trade relations with China and Japan.
In 660, it was defeated by an alliance of Silla and Chinese Tang Dynasty, submitting to Unified Silla.

[hide]History
Founding
According to the Samguk Sagi, Baekje was founded in 18 BCE by King Onjo, who led a group of people from Goguryeo south to the Han Riverbasin. According to the Chinese Records of the Three Kingdoms, during the Samhan period, one of the chiefdoms of the Mahan confederacy was called Baekje.
The Samguk Sagi provides a detailed account of Baekje's founding. Jumong had left his son Yuri in Buyeo when he left that kingdom to establish the new kingdom of Goguryeo. Jumong became Divine King Dongmyeong, and had two more sons with So Seo-no, Onjo and Biryu. When Yuri later arrived in Goguryeo, Jumong promptly made him the crown prince. Realizing Yuri would become the next king, So Seo-no left Goguryeo, taking her two sons Biryu and Onjo south to found their own kingdoms with their people, along with ten vassals. She is remembered as a key figure in the founding of both Goguryeo and Baekje.
Onjo settled in Wiryeseong (present-day Hanam), and called his country Sipje(십제, 十濟, meaning "Ten Vassals"), while Biryu settled in Michuhol (present-dayIncheon), against the vassals' advice. The salty water and marshes in Michuhol made settlement difficult, while the people of Wiryeseong lived prosperously.
Biryu then went to his brother Onjo, asking for the throne of Sipje. When Onjo refused, Biryu declared war, but lost. In shame, Biryu committed suicide, and his people moved to Wiryeseong, where King Onjo welcomed them and renamed his country Baekje ("Hundred Vassals").
King Onjo moved the capital from the south to the north of the Han river, and then south again, probably all within present Seoul, under pressure from other Mahan states. King Gaeru is believed to have moved the capital north of the river to Bukhansanseong in 132, probably in present-day Goyang to the northwest of Seoul.
Through the early centuries of the Common Era, sometimes called the Proto–Three Kingdoms Period, Baekje gradually gained control over the other Mahan tribes.
Expansion
During the reign of King Goi (234–286), Baekje became a full-fledged kingdom, as it continued consolidating the Mahan confederacy. In 249, according to the ancient Japanese text Nihonshoki, Baekje's expansion reached the Gaya confederacy to its east, around the Nakdong River valley. Baekje is first described in Chinese records as a kingdom in 345. The first diplomatic missions from Baekje reached Japan around 367 (According to the Nihon Shoki : 247).
King Geunchogo (346–375) expanded Baekje's territory to the north through war againstGoguryeo, while annexing the remaining Mahan societies in the south. During Geunchogo's reign, the territories of Baekje included most of the western Korean Peninsula (except the two Pyeongan provinces), and in 371, Baekje defeated Goguryeo atPyongyang. Baekje continued substantial trade with Goguryeo, and actively adoptedChinese culture and technology. Buddhism became the official state religion in 384.
Baekje also became a sea power and continued mutual goodwill relationships with theJapanese rulers of the Kofun period, transmitting continental cultural influences to Japan. The Chinese writing system, Buddhism, advanced pottery, ceremonial burial, and other aspects of culture were introduced by aristocrats, artisans, scholars, and monks throughout their relationship.[1]
During this period, the Han River basin remained the heartland of the country.
Ungjin period
In the 5th century, Baekje retreated under the southward military threat of Goguryeo, and in 475, the Seoul region fell to Goguryeo. Baekje's capital was located at Ungjin (present-day Gongju) from 475 to 538.
Isolated in mountainous terrain, the new capital was secure against the north but also disconnected from the outside world. It was closer to Silla than Wiryeseong had been, however, and a military alliance was forged between Silla and Baekje against Goguryeo.
Most maps of the Three Kingdoms period show Baekje occupying the Chungcheong andJeolla provinces, the core of the country in the Ungjin and Sabi periods.
Sabi period
In 538, King Seong moved the capital to Sabi (present-day Buyeo County), and rebuilt his kingdom into a strong state. From this time, the official name of the country was Nambuyeo("Southern Buyeo"), a reference to Buyeo to which Baekje traced its origins. The Sabi Period witnessed the flowering of Baekje culture, alongside the growth of Buddhism.
Under pressure from Goguryeo to the north and Silla to the east, Seong sought to strengthen Baekje's relationship with China. The location of Sabi, on the navigable Geum River, made contact with China much easier, and both trade and diplomacy flourished during his reign and continuing on into the 7th century.
In the 7th century, with the growing influence of Silla in the southern and central Korean peninsula, Baekje began its decline.
Fall and restoration movement
In 660, the coalition troops of Silla and Tang of China attacked Baekje, which was then allied with Goguryeo. A heavily outmanned army led by General Gyebaek was defeated in the Battle of Hwangsanbeol near Nonsan. The capital Sabi fell almost immediately thereafter, resulting in the annexation of Baekje bySilla. King Uija and his son Buyeo Yung were sent into exile in China while at least some of the ruling class fled to Japan.
Baekje forces attempted a brief restoration movement but faced Silla-Tang joint forces. A Buddhist monkDochim (도침, 道琛) and the former Baekje generalBuyeo Boksin rose to try to revive Baekje. They welcomed the Baekje prince Buyeo Pung back from Japan to serve as king, with Juryu (주류, 周留, in modern Seocheon County, South Chungcheong) as their headquarters. They put the Tang general Liu Renyuan (劉仁願) under siege in Sabi. Emperor Gaozong sent the general Liu Rengui, who had previously been demoted to commoner rank for offending Li Yifu, with a relief force, and Liu Rengui and Liu Renyuan were able to fight off the Baekje resistance forces' attacks, but were themselves not strong enough to quell the rebellion, and so for some time the armies were in stalemate.
Baekje requested Japanese aid, and King Pung returned to Baekje with a contingent of 5,000 soldiers. Before the ships from Japan arrived, his forces battled a contingent of Tang forces in Ungjin County.
In 663, Baekje revival forces and a Japanese naval fleet convened in southern Baekje to confront the Silla forces in the Battle of Baekgang. The Tang dynasty also sent 7,000 soldiers and 170 ships. After five naval confrontations that took place in August 663 at Baekgang, considered the lower reaches of Geum River or Dongjin river, the Silla-Tang forces emerged victorious, and Buyeo Pung escaped to Goguryeo.
Social and political structure
The establishment of a centralized state in Baekje is usually traced to the reign of King Goi, who may have first establishedpatrilineal succession. Like most monarchies, a great deal of power was held by the aristocracy. King Seong, for example, strengthened royal power, but after he was slain in a disastrous campaign against Silla, the nobles took much of that power away from his son.
The Hae clan and the Jin clan were the representative royal houses who had considerable power from the early period of Baekje, and they produced many queens over several generations. The Hae clan was probably the royal house before the Buyeo clan replaced them, and both clans appear descended from the lineage of Buyeo and Goguryeo. Eight clans (Sa, Yeon, Hyeop, Hae, Jin, Guk, Mok, and Baek) were powerful nobles in the Sabi era, recorded in Chinese records such asTongdian.
Central government officials were divided into sixteen ranks, the six members of the top rank forming a type of cabinet, with the top official being elected every three years. In the Sol rank, the first (Jwapyeong) through the sixth (Naesol) officials were political, administrative, and military commanders. In the Deok rank, the seventh (Jangdeok) through the eleventh (Daedeok) officials may have headed each field. Mundok, Mudok, Jwagun, Jinmu and Geuku from the twelfth to the sixteenth, may have been military administrators.
According to the Samguk Yusa,[2] during the Sabi period, the chief minister (Jaesang) of Baekje was chosen by a unique system. The names of several candidates were placed under a rock (Cheonjeongdae) near Hoamsa temple. After a few days, the rock was moved and the candidate whose name had a certain mark was chosen as the new chief minister. Whether this was a form of selection-by-lot or a covert selection by the elite is not clear.
Language and culture
Baekje was established by immigrants from Goguryeo who spoke what could be a Buyeo language, a hypothetical group linking the languages of Gojoseon, Buyeo, Goguryeo, and Baekje. In a case of diglossia, the indigenous Samhan people, having migrated in an earlier wave from the same region, probably spoke a variation or dialect of the same language. (See Baekje language.)
Baekje artists adopted many Chinese influences and synthesized them into a unique artistic tradition. Buddhist themes are extremely strong in Baekje artwork. The beatific Baekje smile found on many Buddhist sculptures expresses the warmth typical of Baekje art. Taoist influences are also widespread. Chinese artisans were sent to the kingdom by the Liang Dynasty in 541, and this may have given rise to an increased Chinese influence in the Sabi period.
The tomb of King Muryeong (501–523), although modeled on Chinese brick tombs and yielding some imported Chinese objects, also contained many funerary objects of the Baekje tradition, such as the gold crown ornaments, gold belts, and gold earrings. Mortuary practices also followed the unique tradition of Baekje. This tomb is seen as a representative tomb of the Ungjin period.
Delicate lotus designs of the roof-tiles, intricate brick patterns, curves of the pottery style, and flowing and elegant epitaph writing characterize Baekje culture. The Buddhist sculptures and refined pagodas reflect religion-inspired creativity. A splendid gilt-bronze incense burner (백제금동대향로 Baekje Geumdong Daehyeongno) excavated from an ancient Buddhist temple site at Neungsan-ri, Buyeo County, exemplifies Baekje art.
Little is known of Baekje music, but local musicians were sent with tribute missions to China in the 7th century, indicating that a distinctive musical tradition had developed by that time.
Foreign relations
Relations with China
In 372, King Geunchogo paid tribute to the Jin Dynasty of China, located in the basin of the Yangtze River. After the fall of Jin and the establishment of Song Dynasty in 420, Baekje sent envoys seeking cultural goods and technologies.
Baekje sent an envoy to Northern Wei of Northern Dynasties for the first time in 472, and King Gaero asked for military aid to attack Goguryeo. Kings Muryeong and Seongsent envoys to Liang several times and received titles of nobility.
Tomb of King Muryeong is built with bricks according with Liang's tomb style.
Baekje's presence on the continent
According to the Book of Song, “Goguryeo came to conquer and occupy Liaodong (遼東), and Baekje came to occupy Liaoxi (遼西) (in modern Tangshan, Hebei); the place that came to be governed by Baekje was called the Jinpyeong (Jinping) District, Jinpyeong (Jinping) County.”[3] The records of Book of Jin on Murong Huang states that the alliance of Goguryeo, Baekje, and a Xianbei tribe took military action.[4] TheSamguk Sagi records that these battles occurred during the reign of King Micheon of Goguryeo (309-331).
According to the Book of Liang, “during the time of Jin Dynasty (265-420), Goguryeo conquered Liaodong, and Baekje also occupied Liaoxi and Jinping, and established the Baekje provinces.”[5]
The Zizhi Tongjian, compiled by Sima Guang (1019–1086) of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), states that in 346, Baekje invaded Buyeo, located at Lushan, and as a result the people of the country were scattered westward toward Yan.[6] That year was the first year of the King Geunchogo’s reign (346-375) in Baekje.
The nearly contemporary record of the Book of Qi, as well as the later Zizhi Tongjian, state that a Northern Wei (386-534) army, composed of 100,000 cavalry, attacked Baekje but were defeated in 488. This account is confirmed by the Samguk-sagi records on the tenth year of King Dongseong’s reign (488).[7] Since such an army could not have travelled from northern China to the southwestern corner of the Korean peninsula without passing through the hostile and powerful Goguryeo (in the reign of King Jangsu of Goguryeo (413-491)), without being recorded in contemporary chronicles, the “Baekje” in those records must refer to Baekje presence on the other side of Goguryeo, in Liaoxi.
The Book of Qi also records that in 495 Baekje's King Dongseong requested honorary titles for the generals who repulsed the Wei attack. The titles given by the Southern Qi court carried the names of their domains that sounded like some Liaoxi areas, such as Guangling, Qinghe, Chengyang, etc.[8]
The Territory Section of Mǎnzhōu Yuánliú Kǎo (满洲源流考, "Considerations on the Origin of Manchu") also summarizes Baekje's territories, obviously including a portion of Liaoxi:[9]
- The boundary of Baekje begins from the present-day Guangning and Jinyi provinces in the northwest and then crosses the sea in an easterly direction to arrive at the Joseon’s Hwanghae, Chungcheong, Jeolla, etc. provinces. Running east to west, Baekje’s territory is narrow; running north to south, it is long. Thus it occurs that if one looks at Baekje’s territory from the Liucheng and Beiping area, Silla is located in the southeast of Baekje, but if one looks from the Gyeongsang andUngjin area of Baekje, Silla is located in the northeast. Baekje also borders Mohe in the north. Its royal capital has two castles at two different places in the east and west. Both castles are called “Goma.” The Book of Song says that the place governed by Baekje was called the Jinping district of the Jinping province. Tong-gao says that the Jinping province was located between Liucheng and Beiping of the Tang period.[10]
Hence one of Baekje’s capitals was located in “Liaoxi,” and the other inside the "Joseon" provinces. It was during the reign ofEmperor Wu of Liang that Baekje relocated its capital to southern Korea.
Both the Old and the New History of Tang say that the old Baekje territories were divided up and taken by Silla and Balhae.[11]If Baekje was limited to the southwestern corner of the Korean peninsula, then it would have been impossible for the Balhae to occupy any of the old Baekje territories.
The Silla scholar and alleged Sinocentrist Choi Chi-won (857-?) wrote that “Goguryeo and Baekje at the height of their strength maintained strong armies numbering one million persons, and invaded Wu and Yue in the south and You, Yan, Qi, and Lu in the north of the mainland China, making grave nuisances to the Middle Kingdom”.[12]
According to these records, Baekje must have held the Liao-xi province for more than a hundred years.
Relations with Japan
Cultural Impact and Military assistance
See also: Korean influence on Japanese culture
To confront the military pressure of Goguryeo to its north and Silla to its east, Baekje (Kudara in Japanese) established close relations with Japan. According to the Korean chronicle Samguk Sagi, Baekje and Silla sent some princes to the Japanese court as hostages.[13] Whether the princes sent to Japan should be interpreted as diplomats as part of an embassy or literal hostages is debated.[14]Due to the confusion on the exact nature of this relationship (the question of whether the Baekje Koreans were family or at least close to the Japanese Imperial line or whether they were hostages) and the fact that the Nihon Shoki, a primary source of material for this relationship, is a compilation of myth, makes it difficult to evaluate. The Samguk Sagi, which also documents this, can also be interpreted in various ways and at any rate it was rewritten in the 13th century, easily seven or eight centuries after these particular events took place. Adding to the confusion is the discovery (in Japan) that the "Inariyama sword, as well as some other swords discovered in Japan, utilized the Korean 'Idu' system of writing." The swords "originated in Paekche and that the kings named in their inscriptions represent Paekche kings rather than Japanese kings."[14] The techniques for making these swords were the apparently similar to styles from Korea, specifically from Baekje.[15][16] In Japan, the hostage interpretation is dominant.[citation needed]
Other historians, such as those who collaborated on 'Paekche of Korea and the Origin of Yamato Japan' and Jonathan W. Best, who helped translate what was left of the Baekje annals,[17] have noted that these princes set up schools in Yamato Japan and took control of the Japanese naval forces during the war with Goguryeo, taking this as evidence of them being more along the lines of diplomats with some kind of familial tie to the Japanese imperial family and as evidence against any hostage status. In addition, the translation of the old documents is difficult because in the past, the term "Wa" was derogatory, meaning "midget" or "dwarf," which was a reference to the perceived smaller stature of the average Japanese in ancient times. As a result, it is difficult to assess what is truly being stated, particularly in records made in Korea after the fall of Baekje, as the reference to Yamato Wa (Japan) could have been a derogatory statement by a rival nation (specificallySilla).[citation needed]
As is with many long-past histories and competing records, very little can be definitively concluded. Further research has been difficult, in part due to the 1976 restriction on the study of royal tombs in Japan (to include tombs such as the Gosashi tomb, which is allegedly the resting place of Empress Jingu). Prior to 1976, foreign researchers did have access, and some found Korean artifacts in Japanese dig sites. Recently in 2008, Japan has allowed controlled limited access to foreign archaeologists, but the international community still has many unanswered questions. National Geographic has written that Japan "the agency has kept access to the tombs restricted, prompting rumors that officials fear excavation would reveal bloodline links between the "pure" imperial family and Korea—or that some tombs hold no royal remains at all."[18]
In any case, these Koreans, diplomats and royal relatives or not, brought to Japan knowledge of the Chinese writing system, Buddhism, iron processing for weapons, and various other technologies.[22][23] In exchange, Japan provided military support.[24]
The History of the Three Kingdoms and Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms cite some of the Baekje royal family's descendants and some nobles as dignitaries in the Japanese court, maintaining Korean influence and ensuring the continuation of the Yamato alliance, as in the time of Emperor Yomei, when the Buddhist temple of Horyuji was constructed. It is also known that Muryeong of Baekje, the twenty-fifth king of Baekje, was born in Japan.
According to mythical accounts in the controversial Nihon Shoki, Empress Jingū extracted tribute and pledges of allegiance from the kings of Baekje, Silla, and Goguryeo. At the height of Japanese nationalism in the early 20th century, Japanese historians used these mythical accounts along with a passage in the Gwanggaeto Stele to establish ideological rationale to the imperialist outcry for invasion of Korea.[25][26] Other historians have pointed out that there is no evidence of this Japanese account in any part of Korea, in addition to not being in any viable text in China or Korea.[27][28] Regarding the Gwanggaeto Stele, because the lack of syntax and punctuation the text can be interpreted 4 different ways,[14][29] one which states that Korea crossed the water and subjugated Yamato. Due to this problem in interpretation, nothing can be concluded. Also complicating the matter is that in the Nihongi a Korean named Amenohiboko is described in Nihon Shoki as a maternal predecessor of Tajima-no-morosuku (但馬諸助),[30] This is highly inconsistent and difficult to interpret correctly.
Scholars believe that the Nihon Shoki gives the invasion date of Silla and Baekje as the late 4th century. However, by this time, Japan was a confederation of local tribes without sophisticated iron weapons, while the Three Kingdoms of Korea were fully developed centralized powers with modern iron weapons and were already utilizing horses for warfare. It is very unlikely that a developing state such as Yamato had the capacity to cross the sea and engage in battles with Baekje and Silla.[25][31][32] The Nihon Shoki is widely regarded to be an unreliable and biased source of information on early relations with Korea, as it mixes heavy amounts of supposition and legend with facts.[33][34][35]
Some Japanese scholars interpret the Gwanggaeto Stele, erected in 414 by King Jangsu of Goguryeo, as describing a Japanese invasion in the southern portion of the Korean peninsula. However, Mohan claims that Goguryeo fabricated the Japanese invasion in order to justify its conquest of Baekje.[25] If this stele was a dedication to a Korean king, it can be argued that it would logically highlight Korea's conquests and not dedicate it to a strange incident regarding Japan. In any case, because of these various possible interpretations, the circumstances surrounding the stele are still highly debated and inconclusive.
Chinese scholars participated in the study of the Stele during the 1980s. Wang Jianqun interviewed local farmers and decided that no intentional fabrication occurred, adding that the lime on the Stele was pasted by local copy-making workers to enhance readability.[36] Xu Jianxin of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences discovered the earliest rubbed copy which was made before 1881. He also concluded that there was no evidence the Japanese had intentionally damaged any of the characters on the Stele.[37]
Today, most Chinese and Japanese scholars contradict the conspiracy theories, based on the study of the Stele itself and advocate Japanese intervention in the era,[37][38][39] although its size and effect are disputed.
In the project of writing a common history textbook, Kim Tae-sik of Hongik University (Korea) denied Japan's theory.[40] But,Kōsaku Hamada of Kyushu University (Japan) reported their interpretations of the Gwanggaeto Stele text, neither of them adopting the intentionally damaged stele theory in their interpretations.[41]
The fall of Baekje and the military support from Japan
Some members of the Baekje nobility and royalty emigrated to Japan even before the kingdom was overthrown. In response to Baekje's request, Japan in 663 sent the general Abe no Hirafu with 20,000 troops and 1,000 ships to revive Baekje withBuyeo Pung (known in Japanese as Hōshō), a son of Uija of Baekje who had been an emissary to Japan. Around August 661, 10,000 soldiers and 170 ships, led by Abe no Hirafu, arrived. Additional Japanese reinforcement, including 27,000 soldiers led by Kamitsukeno no Kimi Wakako and 10,000 soldiers led by Iohara no Kimi also arrived at Baekje in 662.
This attempt, however, failed at the battle of Baekgang, and the prince escaped to Goguryeo. According to the Nihon Shoki, 400 Japanese ships were lost in the battles. Only half of the troops were able to return to Japan.
The Japanese army retreated to Japan with many Baekje refugees. The former royal family members were initially treated as "foreign guests" (蕃客) and were not incorporated into the political system of Japan for some time. Buyeo Pung's younger brother Sun-gwang (Zenkō in Japanese) (善光 or 禅広) used the family name Kudara no Konikishi ("King of Baekje") (百濟王) (they are also called the Kudara clan, as Baekje was called Kudara in Japanese). The mother of Emperor Kammu (737-806) was Takano no Niigasa, a descendant of King Muryeong of Baekje.Emperor Kammu treated the Kudara no Konikishi clan as his "relatives by marriage". Baekje royalty are also the ancestors of the Ouchi clan, the Sue clan, Soga clan[42][dead link] and others.
Legacy
Baekje was briefly revived in the Later Three Kingdoms of Korea period, as Unified Silla collapsed. In 892, General Gyeon Hwon established Hubaekje (“Later Baekje”), based in Wansan (present-day Jeonju). Hubaekje was overthrown in 936 by KingTaejo of Goryeo.
In contemporary South Korea, Baekje relics are often symbolic of the local cultures of the southwest, especially in Chungnamand Jeolla. The gilt-bronze incense burner, for example, is a key symbol of Buyeo County, and the Baekje-era Buddhist rock sculpture of Seosan Maaesamjonbulsang is an important symbol of Seosan City.
On 17 April 2009, Ōuchi Kimio (大內公夫) of Ōuchi clan visited Iksan, Korea to pay tribute to his Baekje ancestors.
1945atomic bomb and Korean survivors in Japan[edit]
During the war, Japan brought many Korean conscripts to both Hiroshima and Nagasaki to work as forced labor. According to recent estimates, about 20,000 Koreans were killed in Hiroshima and about 2,000 died in Nagasaki. It is estimated that one in seven of the Hiroshima victims was of Korean ancestry.[7] For many years, Koreans had a difficult time fighting for recognition as atomic bomb victims and were denied health benefits. However, most issues have been addressed in recent years through lawsuits.[8]
After colonizing Korea, Japan invaded China, and subsequently initiated the Pacific War against the United States, Britain, and their allies. Towards the end of the war, U.S. warplanes dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which resulted in a large number of Koreans who lived in Hiroshima and Nagasaki suffering from the effects of the bombs. The objective of this paper is to examine the history of Korea atomic bomb victims who were caught in between the U.S., Japan, the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea).
While I was stationed, as a captain, with the Third Marine Division, Captain Pete Snyder and I visited the site where two Marine Divisions were supposed to land, in Tokyo Bay, abreast, when and if we invaded Japan. Pete was on the planning staff for the invasion and their estimate was 80% casualties in each division. Touring the area, we decided that the 80% was really optimistic. (There was approximately 20,000 men in each Marine division). Kamikaze attacks had caused 800 deaths on one aircraft carrier. I'm sure Army units faced the same problem.
This is when President Harry Truman decided to drop the first atomic bomb. since then, there has been much criticism of this decision. There is much that the public is not aware of, because they were not told. Then they hit Nagasaki. Why two bombs? This will be discussed a little later.
After the Japanese had been in Korea for a while, the Chosen Dam was built and this provided a tremendous amount of hydroelectric power. This area was rich in natural resources and two weeks before Hiroshima was hit, the Japanese detonated their atomic bomb in a test off the coast of Korea. This may have hastened President Truman's decision. The Japanese planned to use their bombs against massed fleets, when and if Japan was invaded.
Now, why hit Nagasaki? These are merely my analysis of what probably happened and why the second bomb was dropped. First of all, the Hiroshima bomb did little to prod the Japanese. One air raid on Tokyo by high explosive and incendiary bombs had resulted in more deaths than at Hiroshima. Japanese friends I talked to were not resentful of the bomb dropping and several were Hiroshima survivors or had lost loved ones there.
This is my reasoning as to why drop the second bomb. We had broken the Japanese code and knew they had used their only bomb in the test off Korea. Traffic indicated they thought we probably had only one also. Hence, the second one on Nagasaki was let fly.
Then came the era of "correct political thought." This is why Americans have not been told of the Japanese bomb. The Smithsonian exhibit on the bombs were anti-American and it took the intercession of the American Legion to have it corrected. The irony of this, many of the anti bomb group would probably not be here because many of their ancestors would have been killed in an invasion.

Sokedai’s professor Saito Naruya confirmed that the finding matched the mixed-blood ancestry hypothesis The researchers plan to conduct further DNA sample analysis from the bones recovered from the Jomon burial sites.

Muryeong of Baekje (462–523, r. 501–23) was the 25th king of Baekje, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. During his reign, Baekje remained allied with Sillaagainst Goguryeo, and expanded its relationships with China and Japan.

[hide]Background[edit source]
The Tomb of King Muryeong calls him King Sama (斯麻), and records his birth year as 462.
The Samguk Sagi calls him King Muryeong, with the personal name (휘) of Sama (斯摩). He is described as the second son of the 24th king Dongseong. He became king when Dongseong was assassinated by the court official Baekga. The following year, he crushed a planned rebellion by Baekga.
Other records[edit source]
China's Liang shu gives his surname as Yeo and personal name as Yung, and states that he restored Baekje into a strong nation.
Japan's Nihonshoki gives his birth year as 461, and describes him as the son of Gonji, the younger brother of the 21st king Gaero, making him the stepbrother of Dongseong. It is said Gonji escaped the invading Goguryeo forces with King Muryeong's mother to Japan, and she went into labor as their ship was passing by a small Japanese island. He was called Semakishi (嶋君) and King Shima (斯麻王) in Japanese records because he was born in an island.
Some scholars claim Muryeong ruled the Yamato region under the name of King Bu before he moved to Baekje to be a king of kings(大王).[1]
Reign[edit source]
In 501, he sent an army to attack Goguryeo's Sugok-seong. In 503, he repelled an attack by theMohe. In 507, he successfully countered another attack by Goguryeo and Mohe forces. In 512, Goguryeo conquered two castles, but Muryeong personally led 3,000 men to destroy the Goguryeo army. In 523, he ordered the building of a fortified wall to defend the northern border.
According to both historical and archeological sources, contact and trade between China and Baekje increased during Muryeong's reign. In 512, according to the Liang shu, Muryeong sent Baekje's first mission to the newly-established court of the Chinese Liang Dynasty. A second mission was sent in 521, announcing various victories over Goguryeo. In reply, the Liang emperor bestowed various titles on him, including "Great General Tranquilizing the East(寧東大將軍)" and "King of Baekje". These titles were also found engraved on a tablet in King Muryeong's tomb.
In 503, he sent a bronze mirror, and in 513 and 516, Confucian scholars to Japan.
Legacy[edit source]
In 1971, King Muryeong's tomb was excavated in Songsan-ri, Gongju, South Korea, where he was buried with his queen.
In 2001, Japan's emperor Akihito told reporters "I, on my part, feel a certain kinship with Korea, given the fact that it is recorded in the Chronicles of Japan that the mother of Emperor Kammu was of the line of King Muryong of Baekje." It was the first time that a Japanese emperor publicly acknowledged Korean blood in the imperial line.[2] According to the Shoku Nihongi,Emperor Kammu's mother, Takano no Niigasa is a descendant of Prince Junda, son of Muryeong, who died in Japan in 513 (Nihon Shoki Chapter 17).

Demara/Desmarais/Demers could all be the same
The following are names of some ancestors who immigrated to New France during the 17th and 18th centuries. Their names were found among the lists of persons who were condemned and sought by the Inquisition (le Saint-Office). The names were found on the census of Jews as well as other sources which clearly indicated that the people with the following surnames were suspected of being descendants of Jews, even if the they were not cognizant of this fact.
